The balance between the natural and the urban
Among all the types of land, the most outstanding is the undeveloped land in La Rioja, to which half of its land belongs, since it is protected (more than 13%) for its environmental, landscape, ecological and cultural wealth, or because they are intended for agricultural, forestry and livestock exploitation. Approximately half of the region is a rural area, and the useful agricultural area occupies about 30%.
In this region, you can enjoy a high quality of life, as it combines all the good things of the natural environment with excellent services. It has the highest per capita income in the country, as well as a high life expectancy. It is perfect for investments, thanks to its agility, closeness, and flexibility, as well as its size and good inter-institutional coordination.
A cutting-edge and sustainable agricultural sector
The primary sector is modern, diversified and specialized according to its different zones (High, Medium and Low Rioja) for the most efficient types of products in each terrain depending on whether it is rainfed (cereals, vineyards, and almond trees) or irrigated (cereals, orchards, potatoes, beets, and fruit trees).
As for livestock, poultry stands out, followed by sheep, pig, bovine, and goat farming. Beekeeping production is also developed.
The Administration promotes the sector with the Rural Development Program of La Rioja, with various grants and subsidies for the modernization of farms, the application of organic farming and the training of young people, among others; to improve competitiveness and carry out sustainable management of natural and forest resources.
